What Is GPA?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a standardised numerical measure of academic performance used by schools, colleges, and universities — particularly in the United States, Canada, and many international institutions. Your GPA is calculated from the grades you earn in each course, weighted by how many credit hours (or units) each course carries.

A higher GPA reflects stronger academic performance. GPA is used for academic honours, scholarship eligibility, graduate school applications, and employment screening in some industries.

How GPA Is Calculated

GPA is calculated using a weighted average formula:

Each letter grade is assigned a grade point value. On the 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0. You multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum all those products, then divide by the total credit hours attempted.

Suppose you took three courses this semester:

GPA = 28.4 ÷ 8 = 3.55

GPA vs CGPA: What's the Difference?

GPA (Grade Point Average) refers to your average for a single term or semester. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is your overall academic average across all completed semesters, weighted by credit hours. CGPA is what appears on transcripts and is used for graduation requirements, graduate admissions, and most academic evaluations.

4.0, 5.0, and 7.0 Grading Scales

Different countries and institutions use different GPA scales:

• 4.0 scale — the most common in the USA and Canada. An A earns 4.0 points.
• 5.0 scale — widely used in Nigeria, parts of Africa, and some other countries. An A earns 5.0 points.
• 7.0 scale — used in Australia and some European universities. An A or High Distinction earns 7.0 points.
