What Is a Weighted Grade?
A weighted grade is an average where some assessments count more than others. Your syllabus might make the final exam worth 40% of the course and homework worth only 10%, so a high exam score moves your grade far more than a high homework score.
Weighted Grade Formula
Multiply each score by its weight, add the results together, then divide by the total of the weights you entered. If your weights add up to 100, the result is your course grade so far.
Worked Example
- Homework: 90% with a weight of 20 → 90 × 20 = 1,800
- Midterm: 75% with a weight of 30 → 75 × 30 = 2,250
- Final exam: 82% with a weight of 50 → 82 × 50 = 4,100
Add the products: 1,800 + 2,250 + 4,100 = 8,150. Divide by the total weight of 100 to get a weighted grade of 81.5%. A simple average of the three scores would have given 82.3%, which overstates the effect of the strong homework score.
