How to Calculate Your Overall Percentage
To find your overall percentage across several subjects or papers, add up all the marks you obtained, add up all the maximum marks, and divide the first total by the second.
This gives subjects with more marks more influence on the result, which is how most schools and exam boards calculate an aggregate percentage.
Worked Example
- Mathematics: 78 out of 100
- English: 65 out of 100
- Physics: 40 out of 50
Total obtained: 78 + 65 + 40 = 183. Total possible: 100 + 100 + 50 = 250. Overall percentage: 183 ÷ 250 × 100 = 73.2%.
Note that this is not the same as averaging the three subject percentages (78%, 65% and 80%), which gives 74.3%. The aggregate method is usually the one that appears on result sheets.
